Tips

Put ICE on your cell phone.

Under your contacts list ICE (In Case of Emergency) and enter emergency contact numbers.

Police and medical personnel are trained to look for ICE on cell phones to know who to notify in an emergency.

Locate the cut-off for the utilities for your home.

_Gas _Electricity _Water _Phone _Cable

Make sure other family members know where these are and post the locations in any easy accessible place, such as on your refrigerator, so it is visible to emergency personnel, neighbors, or outside family members.

Select your out-of-area contact person.
This would be who you would call to let them know your status in an emergency and who could contact family members for you in case communications in your area were limited.

Develop a list of telephone numbers you would need in a disaster.

Keep a copy in your family disaster supply kit and give a copy to your out-of-area contact person.

Develop a list of disaster hazards for your community.

Such as loss of electricity; fire; flood; tornado; earthquakes; etc.

Develop a list of the supplies your family will need in the event of a disaster.

For example—In the loss of electricity you may need matches, candles, a flashlight, extra blankets, a battery-powered radio, batteries, bottled water, canned and dried foods, a manual can opener, a wind-up or battery-powered clock, a telephone that does not depend on electricity, etc.

Assemble these items into a backpack or store in an easily accessible place that the whole family is aware of.
